About the role
- The Controls Systems Engineer II is an independent, field-focused controls engineer responsible for executing commissioning and startup activities for assigned scope. This role validates installation and wiring integrity, performs PLC/HMI/SCADA configuration and optimization, troubleshoots field issues under pressure, and produces test and turnover evidence. The position plays a critical role during commissioning and cutover windows and represents the company directly with client stakeholders.
What you'll do
Key Responsibilities
- Field Commissioning and Startup Execution
- Lead commissioning activities for assigned scope, including loop checks, functional testing, and system startup
- Perform PLC, HMI, and SCADA configuration changes, optimization, and tuning
- Execute commissioning during critical windows with minimal supervision
- Provide responsive onsite support during cutovers, recoveries, and startup events
2) Installation Validation and Troubleshooting
- Validate I/O, control power, and panel integrity prior to energization
- Troubleshoot and drive correction of wiring, shielding, grounding, and installation deficiencies
- Validate drawings against field conditions and maintain accurate redlines
- Coordinate closely with technicians and contractors to resolve field issues
3) Technical Coordination and Field Leadership
- Direct and coordinate technicians and subcontractors during commissioning activities
- Serve as the primary onsite controls point of contact for assigned scope
- Communicate clearly with PMs, engineers, and client representatives during execution
4) Documentation, Testing, and Turnover
- Maintain punch lists, commissioning checklists, and test results
- Produce and organize FAT/SAT records, configuration backups, and version notes
- Ensure turnover documentation is complete, accurate, and client-ready
5) Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to site safety requirements including LOTO and NFPA 70E practices
- Maintain safe work practices in energized and industrial environments
- Follow cybersecurity hygiene for field work, including remote access discipline, backups, and account control
Qualifications
- Strong PLC, HMI, and SCADA programming and troubleshooting capability
- Solid understanding of industrial electrical, instrumentation, and controls systems
- Ability to independently diagnose and resolve field integration issues
- Calm, structured execution under time pressure and during outages
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (Engineering or related technical discipline); equivalent experience acceptable
- 3–7+ years of controls integration, commissioning, and startup experience in industrial or OT environments
Tools, Training, and Certifications
- Vendor platform training (PLC/HMI/SCADA)
- OSHA 30 preferred
- NFPA 70E
- Cybersecurity hygiene for field execution (remote access control, backups)
Licenses & Screening
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to pass background and drug screening per client requirements
- Ability to obtain site-specific or client-required clearances
