The Operator III is the initial level position in the operations progression. The role is responsible for performing routine tasks associated with the safe and efficient operation and basic maintenance of coal-fired power plant equipment, including boilers, turbines, and auxiliary systems. Under close supervision, the Operator III monitors equipment, performs basic inspections, and supports higher-level operators in daily plant activities. This position may require a flexible schedule to support staffing needs. Employees in this classification must progress to the Operator I level within 36 months of hire.
This is an in-person position located at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Pay Rate: Union Scale.
What you will do
- Perform duties associated with the operation and basic maintenance of six 150,000 lb/hr steam boilers and auxiliary equipment.
- Assist in operating and maintaining fly ash and bottom ash systems.
- Perform daily rounds throughout the plant as assigned.
- Make Operator III logbook entries as required.
- Perform labor-related duties in support of CHPP operating crews.
- Maintain plant cleanliness by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning, and painting.
- Assist with the application and removal of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) devices under supervision.
- Actively gain the experience and qualifications required to progress toward Operator II, including obtaining higher-level boiler license certifications.
- Learn, adopt, and apply safety programs.
Conditions of Employment
Must pass a pre-employment drug test, random drug test thereafter in accordance with the published policy of Doyon Utilities. Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska. Must be eligible to work on a military installation in Alaska. Eligibility to work on a military installation includes compliance with Department of Defense mandates with respect to employee background and health directives.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent Required
- Associate's Degree Process Technology or 3 years of relevant experience, for example in an industrial facility as an operator or craftsperson. Required
- 3 years experience working in an industrial facility as an operator or craftsperson. Associates degree in process technology may be substituted for experience. Required
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of FWA CHPP equipment and systems. (required proficiency)
- Basic knowledge of FWA CHPP systems, including boilers, turbines, pumps, and auxiliary equipment. (required proficiency)
- Knowledge of the FWA CHPP SCADA control systems. (required proficiency)
- Ability to understand and execute oral instructions related to CHPP operations. (required proficiency)
- Ability to read and interpret Piping &Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID). (required proficiency)
- Basic knowledge of boilers, turbines, pumps, and auxiliary equipment. (required proficiency)
- Introductory knowledge of SCADA control systems. (required proficiency)
- Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical fundamentals. (required proficiency)
- Ability to read gauges, meters, and alarms and recognize abnormal conditions. (required proficiency)
- Ability to perform routine checks, minor equipment adjustments, and minor preventive maintenance. (required proficiency)
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and written work instructions. (required proficiency)
- Ability to work outdoors or in confined areas for extended periods under unfavorable conditions. (required proficiency)
- Ability to maintain focus and situational awareness while monitoring multiple systems. (required proficiency)
- Sufficient strength, dexterity, vision, and hearing to perform all job duties. (required proficiency)
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs to shoulder level and work in awkward positions (pulling, pushing, uneven footing). (required proficiency)
- Ability to stand, stoop, twist, bend, kneel, reach overhead, or work from a prone position for up to one hour. (required proficiency)
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, operators, and plant personnel. (required proficiency)
