About the role
DESRI is seeking a talented and highly motivated engineer to support the technical performance and long-term reliability of the firm’s growing battery energy storage portfolio. DESRI is a market-leading owner and operator of renewable energy projects throughout the United States. We have acquired or developed approximately 10 gigawatts of contracted capacity across a portfolio of over 70 renewable energy projects in 24 states.
As a member of the Asset Management organization, this role will serve as a technical subject matter expert for battery energy storage systems (BESS), supporting operational performance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management of DESRI’s storage assets. The engineer will work closely with internal teams and equipment vendors to analyze system performance, diagnose issues using operational data, and recommend corrective actions to maintain safe and reliable operations.
This position will play an important role in managing vendor relationships and ensuring that system performance and service obligations align with equipment warranties and long-term service agreements.
What you'll do
You will support the technical performance and long-term reliability of DESRI’s battery energy storage portfolio by analyzing system data, diagnosing operational issues, and working with internal teams and equipment suppliers to implement solutions.
Responsibilities include:
- Serving as a technical subject matter expert for battery energy storage systems, supporting Asset Management in troubleshooting, performance analysis, and operational optimization of BESS projects.
- Analyzing operational and EMS data to diagnose system faults and performance issues across battery systems, PCS/inverters, controls, and auxiliary equipment.
- Conducting root cause analysis (RCA) for equipment faults or performance deviations and developing recommended corrective actions in collaboration with OEMs, EPCs, and service providers.
- Supporting the management and enforcement of equipment warranties and long-term service agreements (LTSAs), including reviewing vendor performance, coordinating technical claims, and identifying contractual remedies when appropriate.
- Maintaining familiarity with the key subcomponents of battery energy storage systems, including battery modules and racks, battery management systems (BMS), power conversion systems (PCS), EMS/SCADA controls, HVAC systems, fire safety systems, transformers, and medium-voltage equipment.
- Working with equipment suppliers to resolve technical issues, implement firmware updates, optimize system parameters, and address recurring or systemic defects.
- Supporting the evaluation and amendment of service agreements and working with internal teams to ensure vendor obligations align with the operational needs of the portfolio.
- Identifying opportunities to improve fleet performance through data analysis, parameter optimization, software enhancements, and improved operational practices.
- Developing and implementing tools, reports, and automation workflows that improve the efficiency of fleet monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance analysis.
- Collaborating closely with teams across engineering, development, construction, and operations to ensure technical issues are addressed effectively throughout the lifecycle of DESRI’s storage assets.
